Introducing momox

Founded in 2004, momox is a seller of used products in categories like books, electronics, and fashion. These products usually have excellent resale potential and significantly contribute to the rise of sustainability in e-Commerce.

The company purchases its stock from consumers under the momox brand name, and after a quality check, resells the items either via its own platforms, medimops and momox fashion, or via global marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

Aside from Germany, momox is now available in five other European countries, including Austria, Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands, proving that second-hand platforms do have a place in cross-border e-Commerce.

The sixth country, the Netherlands, is the target of the company’s most recent expansion, which, according to the first results, was very successful.

The platform has handled over 400 million products since its inception and has 50 million active customers. In 2025, momox reported an annual turnover of 393.5 million euros. The company purchases an average of 150,000 products per day.

momox’s main competitors are Vinted, a very popular second-hand platform specializing in fashion, and Rebuy, another German marketplace offering the exact same product categories of used books and electronics.

medimops, the company’s online platform for books and electronics, is the 5th largest marketplace with 8% of the market after Kleinanzeigen (23.9%), Amazon (19.5%), eBay (13.5%), and Vinted (12.2%).

How does momox work?

Unlike most direct C2C platforms like Vinted, where consumers can buy from and sell to each other, momox acts as an intermediary between buyers and sellers. This allows the company to insert the step of a quality check, ensure a fixed selling price for sellers, and ease the burden of logistics.

Consumers wishing to sell their used products to momox must upload the product's barcode. The platform then offers a price, and if the customer accepts it, they have to ship the product to momox. Once the quality check is complete and the items are approved for sale, momox transfers the price to the seller and lists the product on its appropriate platform.

The process is the same for books, electronics, and clothing items as well. Moreover, if the value of the products reaches a certain threshold, momox offers to cover the shipping costs.

Brand protection on momox

While momox’s quality checks are definitely a step in the right direction, they don’t mean that the platform is 100% free of any potential IP infringements. In fact, due to the nature of second-hand platforms, branded products appearing on momox carry inherent risks for both counterfeiting and grey markets.

The quality checks carried out by momox employees aim to ensure that the products are in reasonably good condition and are fit for reselling. Whether they also check if the products are genuine is not mentioned, which means that good-quality counterfeits in reasonable condition may get a second chance to infringe on brands’ IP rights.

The creation of grey markets is another significant risk with all second-hand platforms, momox included. Resellers from another region can buy products on momox’s appropriate marketplace and sell them in a different market, making full use of any price difference and creating a grey market.

Solving these problems requires an active and targeted approach to online brand protection. Brands need to carry out thorough risk assessments to recognize the scope of the potential issues and devise a fitting strategy to counter them.

When the risks are clear, active online monitoring needs to follow to ensure that once a questionable listing appears on momox or another second-hand marketplace, brand protection experts take note and evaluate it.

This evaluation is key for effective countermeasures. A blanket automated takedown can never be as effective as the enforcement of brands’ IP rights based on intuitive human expertise. Where software-based automated takedowns treat all infringing content equally, experienced human brand protection experts look for patterns, categorize and sort infringements according to seriousness, and devise an enforcement action plan for maximum efficiency.

Conclusion

Today’s move towards a more sustainable economy certainly favors brands that regard re-commerce as a serious opportunity. Platforms like momox can be viable business partners for brands that want to be more sustainable and enhance their presence in re-commerce.

However, it’s important for participating brands to keep guarding their IP rights and set up a comprehensive, targeted online brand protection program to eliminate threats as quickly and effectively as possible.
